Neudesic, a nationally recognized business and technology consulting firm, has partnered with Allrecipes to successfully migrate their infrastructure to a more agile and scalable Azure cloud environment-offering a new set of cloud applications that are helping to drive the end-end digital food experience for 80 million home cooks.

As the world’s largest digital food brand, Allrecipes exceeds 1.5 billion customer touchpoints annually across digital, print, television, online and integrated platforms. Three fourths of these touchpoints originate on mobile devices- many of which occur in grocery stores as users shop, or in kitchens as they prepare their meals. “Speed, responsiveness, and reliability is our mandate and paramount to our brand experience, yet dramatic spikes in traffic are inherent in our engagement model,” said John Keane, chief technology officer, Allrecipes. “The day before Thanksgiving, for example, we might handle a month’s worth of traffic in a single day. While our datacenters were optimized to handle this kind peak traffic, we recognized the need for a more efficient solution that could scale down during non-peak periods.”

Allrecipes selected Neudesic as a proven Microsoft Technology Partner and Azure Insider, to help design the company’s PaaS strategy and execute the cloud migration – decommissioning the company’s various data centers over the course of 7 months. “Our migration to the cloud was a key pillar in the strategic work our teams were doing to ensure we had the right brand experience to serve the behaviors and needs of the next generation of home cooks – across traditional devices, and via emerging technologies such as internet of things (IoT), smart appliances, voice-guided experiences and streaming video,” added Keane. “This was more than a basic ‘lift and shift,’ simply moving enterprise operations and processes to the cloud. We needed a partner to integrate seamlessly with our own agile development processes – someone working side by side with our established team protocols rather than overburdening processes with a too rigid approach.”

The transition to a cloud architecture has allowed the Allrecipes Digital Operations Team to shift from its inherently tactical and process-oriented posture to a far more strategic position. “Working with Neudesic’s Managed Services Team, we focused on the architecture and PaaS strategy upfront, considering what the solution would look like down the road and creating a governance structure as the key piece to smart deployment,” further commented Keane. “This effort has been a transformation of how we host our software, how it behaves, and how we handle production.
